Profession: American dancer whose philosophy of dance moved away from rigid ballet technique and towards what she perceived as natural movement.
Cause of Death: her fondness for flowing scarves was the cause of her death in an automobile accident in Nice, France, when she was passenger in an Amilcar. Her silk scarf, draped around her neck, became entangled around the open-spoked wheels and rear axle, breaking her neck.

ULANOVA, GALINA (1910-1998)
Profession: Soviet Russian ballerina. In 1944, when her fame reached Joseph Stalin, he had her transferred to the Bolshoi Theatre, where she would be the prima ballerina assoluta. Ulanova was a great actress as well as dancer, and when she was finally allowed to tour abroad at the age of 46. Having retired from the stage at the age of 50, she coached many generations of the Russian dancers.
