DUNCAN, ISADORA (1877-1927)

Profession: American dancer whose philosophy of dance moved away from rigid ballet technique and towards what she perceived as natural movement.
Cause of Death: her fondness for flowing scarves was the cause of her death in an automobile accident in Nice, France, when she was passenger in an Amilcar. Her silk scarf, draped around her neck, became entangled around the open-spoked wheels and rear axle, breaking her neck.

FONTEYN, MARGOT (1919-1991)

Profession: an English ballerina of the 20th century. She is widely regarded as one of the greatest classical ballet dancers of all time. She spent her entire career as a dancer with the Royal Ballet.

LE CLERCQ, TANAQUIL (1929-2000)

Profession: principal dancer with the New York City Ballet. Her career was cut short when she contracted polio on a tour in Copenhagen. However she still taught at the Dance Theatre of Harlem and wrote two books.

Profession: one of the last ballerinas of the Romantic ballet era and a protégée of Marie Taglioni.
Cause of Death: complications after burn injuries sustained when her costume caught fire during a rehearsal.

Profession: Irish dancer and actress who became famous as a "Spanish dancer", courtesan and mistress of King Ludwig I of Bavaria. She used her influence to institute liberal reforms.

NIJINSKY, VASLAV (1890-1950)

Profession: Russian danseur and choreographer, cited as the greatest male dancer of the early 20th century. He grew to be celebrated for his virtuosity and for the depth and intensity of his characterizations. He could perform en pointe and his ability to perform seemingly gravity-defying leaps was legendary.

PAVLOVA, ANNA (1881-1931)

Profession: Russian Empire ballerina of the late 19th and the early 20th century. She was most noted as a principal artist of the Imperial Russian Ballet and the Ballets Russes of Sergei Diaghilev. Pavlova is most recognized for the creation of the role The Dying Swan and, with her own company, became the first ballerina to tour ballet around the world.
Cause of Death: Pleurisy after pneumonia

Profession: a Russian ballerina whose stage career spanned from 1913 to 1939. She was one of the outstanding classical ballerinas of the 20th century.

TOUMANOVA, TAMARA (1919-1996)

Profession: a prominent American ballerina and actress. She made her debut at the age of 10 at the children's ballet of Paris Opera and was soon discovered by her fellow émigré, balletmaster George Balanchine. While most of Toumanova's career was dedicated to ballet, she appeared in several films as well.

ULANOVA, GALINA (1910-1998)

Profession: Soviet Russian ballerina. In 1944, when her fame reached Joseph Stalin, he had her transferred to the Bolshoi Theatre, where she would be the prima ballerina assoluta. Ulanova was a great actress as well as dancer, and when she was finally allowed to tour abroad at the age of 46. Having retired from the stage at the age of 50, she coached many generations of the Russian dancers.
